It depends on where you are applying. For US universities, yes: the SAT is the admissions test American colleges know best, and a strong score helps a student from a European school stand out. For most universities in Europe, your school-leaving qualification matters more, but a few well-known ones accept the SAT as their entry test.
The other European question is practical: where to sit it. Türkiye has around a hundred SAT centres and Spain around twenty, while the Netherlands had just two and Germany nine when we checked. For many families, booking a seat is as important as the preparation itself.

College Board closes registration at 11:59 p.m. in New York, which is early the next morning in Europe. The table uses Central European time; adjust by an hour or two if you live further west or east.

Smaller numbers were listed in Hungary, Czechia, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark (one to five each), one in Ireland for December only, and none in Luxembourg. A few Italian and French centres were already full.
The SAT costs US$111 anywhere in Europe: the $68 registration fee plus a $43 international fee (College Board). If you are travelling to another country to test, College Board requires a valid passport as ID (ID rules).

US universities: the main reason European students take the SAT. Admissions are holistic, and a strong score gives a student from a European national or international school a benchmark US admissions officers read easily. See test-optional universities.
Bocconi (Milan): accepts the SAT as a selection test for its bachelor programmes. It will not consider a total below 1040 or a section below 520, does not superscore, and does not accept scores from before 2022 (Bocconi SAT and ACT rules).
IE University (Madrid and Segovia): accepts an SAT of 1300 or above instead of its own admissions test, with 700 or more in Math expected for Science and Technology programmes (IE University admissions test).
Germany: DAAD’s guide for US diploma holders sets out admission through Advanced Placement exams, not the SAT (DAAD guide). In Germany, the SAT is mainly for students heading to the United States.
IB and A-Level students usually take a first SAT in December or March of their penultimate year, keeping the May–June exam season clear, and retake in May, June or the autumn.
Students applying to Bocconi or IE should check each university’s application rounds and work backwards: a score is only useful once it has been released. College Board lists 20 November 2026 for the 7 November scores and 18 December 2026 for the 5 December scores.
If your country has few centres, book as soon as registration opens and plan the journey. Students in the Netherlands, for example, had only Maastricht and Wassenaar to choose from.
