Sitting IGCSE or A Level as a Private Candidate in Europe

Home-educated students, and students whose school does not offer a subject, can sit Cambridge or Edexcel exams as private candidates. The rule is the same in every country: you register with an exam centre that accepts private candidates, and availability varies by city.

• Cambridge: register through a Cambridge school or centre that accepts private candidates (Cambridge: how to register as a private candidate).
• Pearson Edexcel: use Pearson's list of centres that accept private candidates (Pearson: where can I take exams as a private candidate).
• Science practicals: check early whether the centre runs the practical paper or the written alternative, because it changes how your child should prepare.

Applying to University from Europe

Students at European international schools apply in three main directions, and each values the curriculum differently:

• UK universities apply through UCAS, and offers are based on predicted A Level or IB grades. See UK vs US university applications.
• US universities look at the whole school record, and many accept or ask for the SAT. See test-optional universities and our Digital SAT tutoring.
• Universities in Europe set their own entry requirements for IGCSE, A Level and IB applicants, so check each university and course directly. See is IGCSE recognised by universities.

Digital SAT for Students in Europe

The Digital SAT is taken on College Board's Bluebook app at test centres, and the same weekend dates apply worldwide. Registration is open for 7 November and 5 December 2026, then 6 March, 1 May and 5 June 2027 (College Board dates and deadlines). We prepare students 1-on-1 or in small groups of 3 to 5, starting with a full diagnostic; see our Digital SAT guide for Europe for test centres by country and deadlines in European time. Score targets are goals, not guarantees: improvement depends on attending sessions and completing the assigned practice.
