For Canadian high school students who want US universities on their list. Canadian universities rarely need the SAT, but most US applications take it into account, so we build a plan around Grade 11 and 12 and your province’s time zone.

Most Canadian universities admit students on high school grades. The University of Toronto, for example, lets students submit SAT or ACT scores if they wish, and asks only Engineering applicants to disclose all their scores. The SAT matters mainly when a Canadian student applies south of the border.
Canada has plenty of places to sit it: College Board listed between 54 and 67 centres for each remaining 2026 sitting, clustered in the Toronto area and Vancouver, with others from Winnipeg and Calgary to Montreal. A handful were already full when we checked.

College Board deadlines fall at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time, the same clock as Toronto and Ottawa. Provinces further west reach the same moment earlier in the evening, local time.

Starting now? Aim for March 2027. Most students in Canada prepare for 8 to 12 weeks, so the 6 March 2027 sitting is the realistic first target if you begin in December or early January, with 1 May and 5 June as retake options. Tell us your level and target date and we will send a plan on WhatsApp.

Test takers in Canada pay the international price of US$111 ($68 plus a $43 international fee; College Board). Seats in central Toronto and Vancouver can fill, so book once your date is set.

Canadian universities: admission is based mainly on your provincial high school grades. At the University of Toronto, SAT and ACT scores are optional for students who want them considered, and Engineering applicants must disclose all scores (U of T admission requirements). Check each university you apply to.
US universities: many Canadian students apply to both countries. For the US side, a strong SAT supports the application and can matter for merit scholarships. See good SAT scores for US universities.
Test-optional or not: policies differ from college to college. Read test-optional universities before deciding whether to send a score.
A first sitting in the winter or spring of Grade 11 is the usual plan, with a retake in May, June or the start of Grade 12.
US early deadlines often fall in early November of Grade 12, while Ontario’s university applications run through the winter. Finishing the SAT before Grade 12 starts leaves the autumn for applications on both sides of the border.
Scores from the 5 December 2026 sitting are due on 18 December, in time for most regular-decision US deadlines in January.
