In the United States, most students meet the SAT at school. College Board’s 2025 report lists nine states that give it to every 11th grader as part of state testing, and many districts run an SAT School Day. Plenty of students then book a weekend sitting as well, to aim higher or to try again.
That creates two kinds of preparation. For School Day students, the goal is usually to be ready on a fixed date set by the school. For weekend testers, the goal is to pick the sitting that fits their college deadlines and leaves room for a retake.

Starting now? Aim for March 2027. Most students in the US prepare for 8 to 12 weeks, so the 6 March 2027 sitting is the realistic first target if you begin in December or early January, with 1 May and 5 June as retake options. Tell us your level and target date and we will send a plan on WhatsApp.

College Board’s 2025 annual report splits the class of 2025 by how they tested. Students who added a weekend sitting to their School Day SAT, or tested only on a weekend, averaged far higher totals than School Day-only testers.

The gap mostly reflects who chooses to test on a weekend, not the weekend itself, but the lesson is useful: students who plan a dedicated sitting, with preparation, tend to aim higher.
The SAT costs $68 in the US, with no international fee. The states that gave the SAT to all 11th graders in 2025 were Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Rhode Island and West Virginia (College Board).

Test policies differ: some colleges are test-optional, some have reinstated SAT or ACT requirements, and a few do not look at scores. Build your target from the middle-50% ranges of the colleges on your list; see test-optional universities.
Scholarships: many colleges and state programs use test scores in merit aid decisions, so a stronger score can reduce the cost of college.

Most students take a first SAT in the winter or spring of junior year and a retake in late spring, summer or early fall of senior year.
Early Decision and Early Action deadlines usually fall in early November. That is why juniors usually take a first SAT in March, May or June, keeping a senior-year autumn sitting for a retake before early deadlines.
If your school runs an SAT School Day, use it as a first attempt and plan a weekend sitting afterwards if you want to raise the score.
