What IB Chemistry Covers

The course is organised around two strands. Structure covers the particulate nature of matter, bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much, how fast and how far they go, and the mechanisms of chemical change.

Where IB Chemistry Marks Are Usually Lost

• Calculations. Moles, concentrations and equilibrium calculations lose marks through skipped steps and early rounding.
• Mechanisms at HL. Nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic substitution of benzene need curly arrows placed exactly.
• Energetics at HL. Born-Haber cycles and Gibbs energy questions combine several ideas in one problem.
• The internal assessment. Chemistry investigations score well when the method controls variables such as temperature and concentration, and the evaluation weighs real sources of error.

IB Chemistry and UK University Applications

Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemistry courses at UK universities commonly ask for HL Chemistry, so it is worth confirming requirements early, particularly for medicine applicants. UCAS offers are made on predicted grades, so a strong start in DP1 matters. Exam entries are made through your child's IB World School and its DP coordinator.

How Lessons Fit a London Week

Every lesson is live, 1-on-1 and online, with the same tutor each week. Sessions are arranged in UK time (GMT, or BST in summer) around school and co-curricular commitments, usually on weekday evenings or at weekends. Parents receive monthly progress updates, and every new student starts with a free diagnostic trial session.
