Every "hardest IB subjects" list is really an opinion — and chasing the "easiest" six is how students end up locked out of their own degree. Here's the honest view, and a smarter way to choose.
Quick answer: The IB subjects most often rated hardest are HL Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, HL Physics, HL Chemistry, HL History and HL English Literature — they pair heavy content with demanding analysis. But difficulty is personal, and the smarter question is fit: you take one subject from five groups plus a sixth, three at HL and three at SL, so choose your HL subjects around your university requirements and strengths — not a difficulty ranking.
"What's the hardest IB subject?" is one of the most-searched IB questions, and almost every answer is opinion. There is a useful version of the truth — some subjects do stretch most students more — but choosing your six by a difficulty league table is exactly how good students end up in the wrong programme.
The IB Diploma requires six subjects: one each from Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences and Mathematics, plus a sixth from the Arts or a second subject from another group. You take three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. That structure — breadth plus depth — is the whole point of the IB, and it shapes where difficulty lands.
The same subject at HL and SL is genuinely different: HL covers more content, more depth and a heavier internal assessment, and universities usually set their requirements on your HL grades. The single biggest difficulty choice in the IB is Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) versus Applications and Interpretation (AI), at HL or SL. AA is more abstract and proof-based; AI is more applied and statistical. National statistics are confounded: HL Maths AA attracts strong mathematicians, which skews its averages. The "hardest" subject for you is simply the one that fights your strengths. With the right foundations, exam technique and support, the most demanding HL subjects produce 7s every year — the question is fit, not fear.
In Studies in Language and Literature, HL Literature is the stretch; in Sciences, HL Physics and Chemistry; in Mathematics, HL Analysis and Approaches; in Individuals and Societies, HL History for its essay load; and in Language Acquisition, the jump toward genuine fluency. Knowing the demanding option within each group helps you balance your three HL choices sensibly, rather than accidentally stacking three of the hardest subjects on top of one another.
The IB's difficulty is not only in the subjects. On top of six courses you carry the Extended Essay, an internal assessment in nearly every subject, and Theory of Knowledge — all with deadlines that tend to cluster in the same months. A great deal of what students call "hard" about the IB is this simultaneity, which makes time management as decisive as raw ability.
You only need three subjects at Higher Level. If a required group is your weakest, taking it at SL — while keeping HL for your strengths and your degree requirements — is a smart way to protect your overall score. Deciding where to place HL and SL is itself part of managing the difficulty of the Diploma.
A hard HL subject becomes manageable when you attack it the right way. Stay current — the sciences and Maths compound quickly, so a small weekly gap becomes a crisis by exam season. Start the internal assessment early rather than in the deadline crush. And practise past papers against the markbands, so you learn how marks are actually awarded rather than just covering content. Most students who feel a subject is "too hard" are really carrying a backlog or an unfixed foundation gap — both far more responsive to timely, targeted support than to more hours of the same revision.
