Which Physics Exam Is Your Child Sitting?

Singapore's international schools use different Physics syllabuses, and each is assessed differently. Knowing the exact papers is the first step, because it decides what to practise and how to split time between theory and practical skills.

The Practical Paper: What Singapore Families Should Check Early

Practical skills carry real marks in every Physics syllabus above, but they are tested in different ways:

• Cambridge IGCSE 0625: 20% of the grade comes from either Paper 5, a hands-on practical test, or Paper 6, a written Alternative to Practical. Which one your child sits depends on the school or exam centre, so confirm it at the start of Year 10.
• Edexcel 4PH1: there is no separate practical exam. Practical skills from the specification's listed investigations are tested inside the two written papers.
• Cambridge A Level 9702: Paper 3 is a two-hour hands-on practical, and Paper 5 is a written paper on planning, analysis and evaluation of experiments.

Private candidates in Singapore register for Cambridge IGCSE through the British Council in Singapore. Check with them which practical option applies before entering, and leave time to practise it. We teach Paper 6 and Paper 5 technique explicitly: variables, tables with units, graph plotting, gradients and uncertainties.

Where Physics Marks Are Usually Lost

• Units and significant figures. A correct number with a missing or wrong unit often loses the final mark.
• Definitions. Mark schemes reward precise wording, for example for moment, specific heat capacity or electromotive force.
• Unshown working. Multi-step calculations earn method marks only when each step is written down.
• Graph work. Small gradient triangles, unlabelled axes and poor scales cost easy marks, especially in Paper 6 and Paper 5.
• Uncertainties at A Level. Combining percentage uncertainties and justifying conclusions is where many 9702 students drop from A* to A.

How Lessons Fit a Singapore Week

Every lesson is live, 1-on-1 and online, with the same tutor each week. Sessions are arranged in Singapore Standard Time around school and co-curricular commitments, usually on weekday evenings or at weekends.
