How Many IGCSEs Do You Need for A-Levels or Sixth Form?
Five at grade 4 / C is the absolute floor. Competitive sixth forms set the bar at six to eight at grade 6 / B or above. Here is what each tier actually expects.

How many IGCSEs do you need to start A-Levels? The honest answer depends on which sixth form. The floor — set by most UK and international sixth forms — is five passes at grade 4 / C or above, including English Language and Mathematics. The ceiling — set by the most competitive academic sixth forms — is eight or more passes at grade 6 / B or above, with grade 7-9 / A*-A in subjects the student wants to continue at A-Level. This guide breaks down the tiers and what's actually expected at each.
Sixth forms broadly fall into four tiers based on entry requirements:
Tier 1 — Inclusive sixth forms: 5+ IGCSEs at grade 4 / C, including English and Maths. Accepts a wide range of students. Most state sixth forms and many international schools.
Tier 2 — Standard academic sixth forms: 6+ IGCSEs at grade 5 / B, including English at grade 5+ and Maths at grade 5+. Most international schools and UK independent sixth forms.
Tier 3 — Competitive sixth forms: 7+ IGCSEs at grade 6 / B+, with grade 7+ / A in subjects continuing to A-Level. UK independent schools, top international academies.
Tier 4 — Highly selective: 8+ IGCSEs with most at grade 7-9 / A*-A. Schools like Westminster, Eton, St Paul's, and the most academically selective international schools.
Subject-Specific Requirements for A-Level Entry
Beyond the overall count, sixth forms set subject-specific requirements for entry to each A-Level. The typical patterns:
A-Level Maths: IGCSE Maths at grade 7 / A minimum (some schools accept grade 6 / B with a strong rationale). For Further Maths, grade 8-9 / A*.
A-Level Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology): IGCSE Physics/Chemistry/Biology at grade 6 / B minimum, grade 7+ / A preferred. Triple separate Sciences strongly preferred over Coordinated.
A-Level English Literature: IGCSE English Literature at grade 6+ / B+ and English Language at grade 6+ / B+.
A-Level Modern Languages: IGCSE in the language at grade 7+ / A.
A-Level Humanities (History, Geography, Economics, etc.): IGCSE in the subject at grade 6+ / B+ if previously studied; otherwise depends on the sixth form's policy.
A-Level Art, Music, Drama: IGCSE in the subject at grade 6+ / B+; portfolio or audition may be required.
If You Fall Short
Three honest routes if your child doesn't meet the sixth-form bar:
Resit the gap subjects. Both Cambridge and Edexcel allow resits in subsequent sessions. A student who needs to push Maths from 4 to 5 / 6 can sit a focused resit in October/November (Cambridge or Edexcel) or January (Edexcel only). See when IGCSE exams run.
Apply to a less selective sixth form. Tier 2 or Tier 1 sixth forms with broader entry will accept students who didn't meet a more competitive Tier 3 bar. The A-Level outcome can still be strong with the right teaching.
Foundation year or vocational route. Some students benefit from a foundation year before A-Levels (typically at a college or international school's foundation programme) or a BTEC route as an alternative.
The Practical Recommendation
For students currently in Year 10-11 aiming at A-Levels:
Target 8-10 IGCSEs at grade 6+ / B+ minimum.
Push the subjects you plan to continue — A-Level subjects — to grade 7+ / A.
Don't sacrifice the wider profile. Eight 7s look better than three 9s and five 5s. Universities and sixth forms read consistency.
If borderline on a target subject, focused 1-on-1 tutoring in the months before exams is the highest-ROI investment.

Most UK and international sixth forms require 5+ IGCSEs at grade 4 / C or above, including English Language and Mathematics. Competitive sixth forms set the bar at 6+ at grade 5 / B (standard academic) or 7+ at grade 6 / B+ with grade 7+ / A in continuing subjects (top-tier). Highly selective sixth forms expect 8+ with most at grade 7-9 / A*-A.
IGCSE Maths at grade 7 / A is the typical minimum for A-Level Maths entry. Some sixth forms accept grade 6 / B with strong rationale; some require grade 8 / A* for Further Maths. For competitive A-Level Maths programmes targeting Oxbridge or Imperial, grade 8-9 / A* is expected.
Not usually directly. Most sixth forms require IGCSEs (or UK GCSEs, or another equivalent Year-11 qualification) as the entry credential. Students moving from other systems may be assessed individually — for example, a student with strong national-curriculum results from their home country may be accepted if the qualifications are deemed equivalent. Foundation programmes are an alternative for students without recognised Year-11 qualifications.
Typically 6+ IGCSEs at grade 5 / B or above, including English and Mathematics. For HL subjects, grade 7+ / A in the corresponding IGCSE is typical. Maths AA HL specifically usually requires grade 8-9 / A* in IGCSE Maths Extended.
Three routes: (1) resit the gap subjects in the October/November or January (Edexcel) session for a quick turnaround; (2) apply to a less selective sixth form whose entry bar matches your profile; (3) consider a foundation year or vocational alternative. None of these closes the door to university — they just route differently.
No. Sixth forms read the full IGCSE profile. Maths and English are the most universal requirements (both at grade 4-5 / C-B minimum), but admissions also examine subject-specific grades for A-Level entry (Physics for A-Level Physics, etc.) and the overall consistency of grades. A profile with 8 grade 6s is read more favourably than one with 3 grade 9s and 5 grade 5s.
